Ready to Add More LIFE to Your Years?

Why Not Start Today?

Dear Friend,

If you're like most people, you really want to live life with passion ... to feel healthy and energetic so you can accomplish more of what you want in life.

Probiotics are an excellent way to optimize your health, and that’s why I recommend them, in whole food and supplement form, to almost all of my patients.

The term “probiotic” comes to us from the Greeks, and means "for life". (So now you understand what the word "antibiotics" really means.) The term was introduced in 1965 to describe live microorganisms that perform a number of health-enhancing functions.*

Historically, people around the world have considered foods high in natural probiotics (like yogurt and naturally fermented sauerkraut) to be an important part of their diet.
These foods were recognized as necessary because they kept for long periods without spoiling, and because they were delicious and health-promoting.
Some excellent examples of traditional foods which act as “probiotic delivery systems” for the body include:

  •  In Bulgaria: soured milk and kefir
  •  In India: a before-dinner yogurt drink called lassi
  •  In Europe (dating back to Roman times): sauerkraut
  • In Asia: fermented vegetables such as cabbage, turnips, eggplant, cucumbers,  onions, squash, and carrots

The Ratio Between "Good" and "Bad" Bacteria is
Critical to Your Health*

The science of probiotics has become a rapidly growing field, generating a great deal of interest, both from physicians and consumers.
I've heard it said that "death begins in your colon." On the flipside, let’s assume "life evolves in your colon, so maintaining great colonic health becomes akin to your improved wellness overall.*

Some of the statistics about your colon read like a "Ripley's Believe It or Not". Did you know that...?

  • There are 500 species of bacteria living inside you
    .
  • One hundred trillion bacteria live inside you -- more than the number of cells you have in your entire body.
  • The weight of these bacteria comes in at about two to three pounds.

Of all your bacteria, most healthcare experts believe you should have at least 85% “good” bacteria.*

The Bacteria Inside You Might Make You Fat

Before you were born, your GI (gastro-intestinal) tract was sterile. The moment you came into the world, colonization of bacteria began in your gut.

If you were fortunate enough to have been breastfed, the first bacteria to settle in included the immune-building ones from breast milk… increasing your level of health and favoring your survival.

In a sense though, if you’re like most people, it’s downhill from there, as most people spend the rest of their lives "trashing" their bodies with poor dietary choices and lifestyle habits that do not promote good digestive health.
Yet through it all, the microorganisms living in your gut continually and dynamically affect your entire body.*
Your gut flora plays a role in the efficient digestion of the foods you eat and can have an impact on your weight. *
Helpful bacteria prevent the growth of undesirable ones by competing for both nutrition and attachment sites in the tissues of your colon.
Eating excess amounts of sugary foods becomes problematic for your weight for many reasons, one of which is that sugar feeds the undesirable bacteria.*

In a study reported in USA Today (12/27/2006) and the journal, Nature, (12/21/2006), evidence showed that obese people contained abundant bacteria from a group called firmicutes. While in leaner people, a bacteria called bacteroidetes appeared more abundantly.

The study then reported that when obese people lost weight, the amount of firmicute bacteria decreased and their bacteroidetes bacteria level increased.

Where Have All the “Good” Bacteria Gone?

It seems that in our collective zeal to combat illness, we may have outdone ourselves. As a whole, you are less exposed to bacteria now than in the past… both "bad" and "good" bacteria.
Many health-promoting foods that have a long history of use, contain good bacteria…think cultured foods like yogurt, cheese, and sauerkraut.
But due to strict food safety regulations, few bacteria (“bad” or “good”) survive the manufacturing process.
When foods are pasteurized or sterilized at the end of the production process, all of the bacteria, both good and bad, get destroyed.
While of course the goal of pasteurization involves helping prevent food-borne illness, it also means you receive less health-promoting bacteria from your food.

Since helpful bacteria are increasingly absent in your food, it becomes even more important for you to consider supplementation with probiotics to give your body an extra "edge"… to maximize the effects of a wellness-promoting diet and to help you get and stay thin.*

Who Really Needs Probiotics?

As a naturopathic doctor, I’ve been trained to view the body holistically. I see proper digestive function as integrally linked to your optimal health.

A patient named Kate came to me complaining of digestive discomfort and bloating after almost every meal. These issues had been bothering her ever since she'd taken antibiotics to combat a bout with lyme disease a few months previously.
I recommended she increase her intake of naturally fermented foods and take a therapeutic (high) dose of high quality probiotics in order to replenish the good bacteria in her digestive tract. After one month of treatment, she reported that her symptoms had resolved.
She has stayed on a maintenance dose and has remained symptom free.

It is my firm belief that everyone benefits from probiotics.
I feel the need for probiotics becomes especially great if you’ve been on medications such as antibiotics, steroids, or birth control pills.
Others who should definitely consider supplementation are those who suffer from any type of digestive disorder, immune system disorder, yeast infections, or problem with weight.

Why take the chance that your digestive tract lacks the bacterial balance you need to be healthy and attain your optimal weight?

How Do You Get the “Good” Bacteria You Need?

I believe we should all be eating generous amounts of properly fermented foods like high quality organic plain yogurt and lacto-fermented vegetables such as pickles and sauerkraut.

However, I realize that the majority of people do not have the time or inclination to spend a few hours making fermented foods. Also, some people complain that they do not like the taste.

If eating naturally fermented foods regularly does not work for your lifestyle, you need to take a good probiotic supplement.

Even if you are able to eat fermented foods, taking a probiotic supplement will complement your diet and ensure optimal levels of good bacteria.
